Perimenopause is the transitional period before menopause. It can come with a wide range of symptoms and may last for years leading up to menopause, which officially begins once a woman hasn’t had her period for 12 months.

During this transition, the ovaries begin producing less estrogen, causing irregular or erratic periods. Perimenopause can begin as early as the mid-30s or as late as the mid-50s. Perimenopause symptoms, the age of onset, and how long it lasts will vary between individuals.

Perimenopause Signs and Symptoms

Generally, the first sign of perimenopause is irregular periods. Most people will transition from having fairly predictable menstrual cycles to unpredictable ones. While additional perimenopause symptoms can vary, individuals are likely to experience at least one of the following:

  • Heavier than usual or lighter than usual periods
  • Hot flashes
  • Vaginal dryness and discomfort during sex
  • Needing to urinate more frequently
  • Insomnia
  • Changes in mood

Additionally, the decrease in estrogen can also lead to bone thinning or changing cholesterol levels. You should see your healthcare provider and an OB/GYN regularly to monitor your health.

Can You Treat Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is a natural part of life, so you can’t stop it. However, there are ways to make perimenopause symptoms more manageable. Your provider may recommend:

  • Antidepressants: These medications can help with mood swings.
  • Birth control pills: Birth control can stabilize hormone levels and help relieve uncomfortable perimenopause symptoms.
  • Estrogen therapy: There are creams, gels, patches, and pills available to help stabilize estrogen levels.
  • Gabapentin: This is a seizure medication that can also relieve hot flashes in some women.
  • Vaginal creams: There are over-the-counter and prescription vaginal creams available that can relieve vaginal dryness and decrease sex-related pain.

Certain lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in light exercise, and avoiding triggers for hot flashes, can also help.
