As September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, PGOMG has decided to boost our dedication toward educating patients on how making healthy choices to help prevent ovarian and other cancers. First, we recommend that you check out our blog post Ovarian Cancer: What You Need to Know Today for a full overview of ovarian cancer facts and symptoms.
If you find that you are experiencing any of the symptoms set out in the above blog post, please contact PGOMG to discuss those symptoms and how you are feeling. Your provider will determine if there is a need for tests or screening.
Many patients wonder how they can protect themselves and loved ones from ovarian and other cancers. Fortunately, there are some simple, straightforward steps you can take to help protect yourself. These include:
- Keep away from tobacco products – if you are in need of products to help you stop tobacco usage, please contact your physician, who will be able to provide appropriate assistance and resources.
- Review your diet – can your diet be improved in any way? Are you hydrated? Are you over or under weight? How much of the recommended fruits and vegetables are you really eating? Be honest with yourself, you control what goes into your body – why not make good nutrition a key part of your daily routine?
- Keep an eye on sun exposure – the amount of time your skin spends in direct contact with the sun each day may increase vitamin D, but it can also cause melanoma.
- Get active – staying active regardless of your age can help in preventing certain types of cancer. If you find that you have a hard time working in a real exercise routine, start small and build up to something more substantial. Take the stairs when possible, walk the long way to work from the parking lot, use your breaks wisely and take a walk.
- Talk to your doctor – your provider will screen you for certain cancers when age appropriate or as needed, but it up to you to address any specific concerns you may have, especially if you have a family history of ovarian or other cancers. Your doctor is there for diagnosis and treatment, of course, but also for support. An appointment at PGOMG is the ideal opportunity to address any changes or discomfort you are experiencing with your body.
